Bright Blenders
When I started making patterns, blenders (aka simple, supporting patterns) were my jam. But as I’ve been pushing myself to get better, I’ve been focused on more complex layouts and detailed motifs. Although those hero patterns are the show stoppers, the blenders are the workhorses. Think about all the things you see that have little dots, stripes, basic flowers, on them. They’re also perfect for pattern mixing or adding some subtle detail to a busy interior space or sewing project.
So when designer Erin Kendal shared that she was doing a blender challenge, it was the perfect opportunity to work on some blenders. It also coincided with launching my Spoonflower shop so it was a jumpstart on my Spoonflower designs.
(And it means you can get all these blender patterns on fabric, wallpaper, and home decor now. I’ve also added 325 designs and counting so check out my shop if you’re looking for colourful and playful fabric or wallpaper.)
This collection includes some basic patterns like brushstrokes, a halftone dot texture, harlequin diamonds, and an inky flamestitch.
The challenge also pushed me to try a few things I wouldn’t have chosen on my own like an animal print, a celestial pattern, and a chunky plaid, and to finally get this organic shapes design out of my drafts folder.
It also resulted in a few unexpected favourites like a terrycloth texture tossed floral, a funky *unintentional gummy bear* herringbone, a dainty ditsy floral, and some electric branches.
I made the prompts my own with bright colour combos and funky texture and I love how these blenders turned out. You can shop these designs in a bunch of colourways on Spoonflower and all these patterns are also available for licensing.
